This is an introduction to ethics written from a Christian perspective and directed to a Christian audience. While recognizing the importance of the Bible as a determinant of ethical principles, Hollinger (Messiah Coll.; Individualism and Ethics) also recognizes that we live in a human, fallen, complex world. Arguing that any ethics must be grounded in a particular community and develop out of that community's worldview, Hollinger ably describes the foundations of Christian ethics and the role of ethics in a postmodern world, which he sees as socially fragmented and thus unable to engage in significant moral discourse. In a volume based more on principles than particulars, he argues for a balance between love and justice. An excellent introduction to ethics, the book offers a good balance between explaining what ethics is and providing an approach to dealing with ethical issues in a pluralistic society. Intended as a textbook for Christian seminaries and colleges, it will nevertheless appeal to anyone interested in the role of ethics in contemporary society. This is a very detailed book on ethics in a Christian way. Definitely impactful while I read it for class, but I'm not sure I remember much of it as it was pretty esoteric.
This book is assuredly a textbook but really great information. Skip over the things that bore you but take in what it's saying to you. A great worldview.
This book is an amazing text, that digs deeply into how to view and handle ethics from a Christian perspective. I bought it for a class text. However I would buy it for casual reading as well it's very benificial and practical for the modern day Christian trying to find the balance for ethics in the business world and personal life as well. Love it!!
I used this book in a recent course on Christian Ethics. It was a required reading, so whether I wanted to or not, I had to. It was not a bad experience for me at all. On the contrary, I learnt a lot.
I found this book very good at bringing out the Christian way at looking into morality. This book does not make the choices black and white but brings them into what people face.
Ethics is one of those areas of study that some find subjective, and they truly can be when it comes to social ethics and other areas of ethics. However, when it comes to Christian ethics, it is an entirely different story. The difference between Christian ethics and all other areas of ethics is only one of the many things that Hollinger lays out in this book. I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about ethics.
Surprised how much I like a book on ethics.
This book is an excellent primer on the history of ethics and how to work through ethical issues as a Christian. I wish there would have been some more concrete direction, but I guess I shouldn't have expected this from a book on something as complex and nuanced as Christian ethics.
